Non – Fiction

I started my writing journey by publishing nonfiction. I wrote articles, devotions, and books based on things I learned and witnessed. My topics ranged from mental health, grief, and trusting the Lord as a young widow to antiques, glass, and artists. I was comfortable translating my observations and experiences into words.  I wrote my first book, Friendship Counseling: Biblical Foundations for Helping Others from Sunday School lessons which I developed after I obtained my Masters in Community Counseling. My second book, Teaching the Story: Fiction Writing In Grades 4-8 was based on creative writing lessons I taught in my daughters’ schools. Recently, I have enjoyed reading nonfiction biographies and was inspired by Jacob Riis’s Camera: Bringing Light to Tenement Children and The Diamond Boy: The Creation of Diamonds and the Life of H. Tracy Hall. I love how the lives of little-known people from history are now accessible to children—and to the adults who read the books to them.

I have two STEAM picture books on submission. Not a Scientist? Elizabeth Clarkson’s Battle for Backyard Birds is the story of how Elizabeth Clarkson fought against DDT in Charlotte, NC. Piece by Piece: Paul Stankard’s Paperweight Magic is a free verse book that shows how Paul Stankard overcame dyslexia to become an internationally acclaimed paperweight artist.
