REVIEW
“‘Fact: Change rarely shows up the same way twice. You can count on this: It never leaves until it’s done.’” – Island of Spies
Change is a funny thing. Most people don’t realize it’s happening until it’s over. As uncomfortable as it is, adjusting to new things is a skill that makes us strong.
Sarah Stickly Lawson knows she’s in trouble when she’s called by her full name – something that happens more than she’d like to admit. As mischievous as they come, red-headed Stick fervently dreams of becoming a famous scientist. When not in school, her days are spent with her two best friends, Rain and Neb. Together, in their secret HQ, the Dime Novel Kids study, practice, and experiment to polish each one’s unique skill. In fact, the Dimes are so confident in their abilities, they even sent a letter to the FBI awaiting official junior agent activation! Between Stick’s brains, Rain’s artistic touch and Neb’s practiced boy-scout-skills, this trio proudly claims the title of the smartest crew on the island.
The Dime Novel Kids’ steady stream of life is turned upside down when the ominous rumors of war come true. U-boats stray alarmingly close to their beloved island, blowing up vessels with loved ones aboard. Stick’s father is lost at sea. Rain struggles in a prejudiced world. Neb is at the breaking point with his family. Something fishy is going on with the island’s quirky postmistress, Miss Agnes. And the icing on the cake is when two mysterious artists show up.
The truth is that war changes people. They become so entangled in fear that they can’t see the light ahead of them. Reckless things are done, careless words are thrown, and tempers are lost. Terrible actions are the result of bitter anger.
When things get heated enough, the Dime Novel kids do their part to help glue the shattered pieces of their previous life back together. These three must unearth who the true spies are. It’s a difficult task, even for bright kids with incredible memories.
ACTION PACKED!
In a sudden turn of tides, the moderate paced book accelerates swiftly, and readers are drawn into the riveting climax. Perilous predicaments, dangerous decisions, and risky rescues add up to chaotic disarray. That’s when the Dimes realize how they are desperately in over their heads.
Island of Spies truly lives up to its name. This book is brimming with original codes and cryptic clues. Filled with humor, this book is great for middle grade readers looking for something new to read. It really is clear how much time and energy Sheila Turnage put into this novel; the writing is directed at the reader in a way that feels like you are right there beside the Dime Novel Kids on Hatteras Island, and a part of all their thrilling adventures.
Although this book is set during war, there is not an exceeding amount of violence, and no bad language.
Inspired by real U-boat attacks off the shores of North Carolina, this excellent historical fiction is not
